That’s the view of former Celtic man John Barnes who believes even Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola would struggle at Ibrox.
Gerrard has been strongly linked to the role following the sacking of Graeme Murty.
The Liverpool legend has admitted he has had talks with Rangers chiefs though no formal announcement has yet been made.
But ex-Liverpool icon Barnes doesn’t think Gerrard will have a simple task if he takes over at the SPL giants.
“Forget about reputation as a player,” Barnes said.
“What many have to understand is, as I mention, Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp or any other great managers going to Rangers at this moment in time, possibly would not be able to turn it around straight away.
“So it’s not because Steven is inexperienced, it’s not because he’s not managed anyone.
“If he doesn’t challenge Celtic straight away it’s got nothing to do with his ability.”
Gerrard is currently Liverpool Under 18s manager having spent 17 senior years at Anfield.
The former midfielder was coy over confirming the deal when asked on BT Sport on Tuesday night, suggesting an announcement will not be made until after his TV punditry commitments in the Champions League this week.
“Yeah there’s truth in the rumours,” Gerrard said.
“I’ve held initial talks with Rangers and the plan is to pick them up in a couple of days time. We’ll see (if it happens).”
