WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. • The Cardinals get their second crack in five days at Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander on Wednesday. Last Friday, Verlander struck out eight Cardinals in five innings, allowing only a home run by Paul DeJong.

Longtime Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who opposed two-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer in his last start, will open for the Cardinals. In two spring starts, Wainwright has allowed five hits and a run while walking five in 5 2/3 innings.

Matt Carpenter will play first base, marking the first infield duty Carpenter has had this spring season, almost all of which he has missed because of early back trouble. He walked twice in two plate appearances on Tuesday as a designated hitter.

Yadier Molina. Dexter Fowler and Jedd Gyorko are the only regulars not on the trip.

Dominic Leone, Tyler Lyons and John Brebbia are among the other potential pitchers for the Cardinals.
